Video Distribution and SEO: Getting Seen After You Hit Publish

Publishing is not distribution. Here's how one video becomes ten pieces of ranked, recommended, evergreen content.

Publishing a video is the halfway point. The other half — the half that decides whether it drives traffic for a week or for five years — is distribution. And distribution, for video, is mostly SEO.

The single-video, ten-asset framework

Every video we publish gets turned into ten discoverable assets before we consider it "shipped." A single 8-minute video becomes:

  1. The YouTube upload (primary home).
  2. A written article on your site with the video embedded (Google's happy path).
  3. A cleaned-up transcript, published below the video, for indexable text.
  4. Three to five short-form clips (60–90s) for TikTok, Reels, Shorts.
  5. A long-form LinkedIn post with the key takeaways.
  6. An X thread with the same beats.
  7. A newsletter send linking to the article.
  8. A Reddit comment answering a related question, linking to the video.
  9. An audio-only cut, published to your podcast feed.
  10. A visual quote card for Instagram or Pinterest.

YouTube SEO: what still works

  • Title: the exact phrase you want to rank for, front-loaded, then a payoff clause.
  • Description: the first two sentences repeat the title and give the value proposition. Then a timestamped chapter list. Then five to ten related links.
  • Chapters: add them. They increase watch time by 8–15% on average because viewers skip to the part they want and stay.
  • End screen: point to one specific next video, not "more from this channel." Specific always wins.

Getting Google to rank your video article

Google indexes YouTube videos, but it ranks your own article higher if you do this right. The recipe:

  • Embed the YouTube video near the top of the article.
  • Add VideoObject schema markup pointing to the YouTube URL.
  • Publish the transcript — clean, chunked into H2/H3 sections, not a wall of text.
  • Answer the exact question the video answers in the article's first paragraph.
  • Link to the article from three other articles on your own site.

Short-form clips: not a strategy on their own

TikTok/Reels/Shorts are traffic-hunters, not conversion channels. Use them to pull strangers into your ecosystem, then convert with long-form. A clip that goes viral is worth nothing if there's no funnel behind it.

The compounding math

A single well-distributed video with 20,000 views in year one will typically deliver another 40,000–60,000 views over the following two years, at no additional cost. That is why one polished video every two weeks beats five rushed ones every week — evergreen is the entire game.
